The Rumbly Tummy: The Fireside (with Makin' Maple!)
Happy New Year! We’ve been enjoying a nice few weeks off with our family in Tallahassee, FL, where the weather is temperate if not a hot 75 degrees most days. We’ve been eating too much tasty holiday food and then taking the dogs on walks around a neighborhood that still has it’s Christmas lights up. We’ve become accustomed to the classic Florida Santa- long beard and red hat, in swimming trunks and a Hawaiian shirt- and with snowflake shaped Christmas lights hanging off of p

Bottle Of Wine
Well we are officially in New England for the Fall, but it is not officially Fall in New England yet. We're in Connecticut for a few days hanging out with our friend Mike Shannon who you might remember as that guy we used to live with when we all lived in Nashville and our bass player on We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know. We're doing the things we used to do when we lived together, mostly binge watching shows on Netflix and playing with the dog. It's a good life. M

The Rumbly Tummy: Dilly-Dally Beans
These little squirrels are starting to feel that crisp Fall air up here in the Northeast. Which means that we've been dragging our feet quite a bit-- taking longer walks, a few naps, and generally getting ahead of ourselves for our winter hibernation. But as the stands at the Farmer's Markets are showing fewer tomatoes and more hard shelled squashes, we are finally getting a move on for our winter storage. No more dilly dallying for us. Except for beans. This month on Th

I'll Go Anywhere With You
Just a head's up, Double Americana this week will be Wednesday at 1:30PM EST, instead of our normal noontime slot, on account of us doing a radio show called "Whiskey Before Breakfast." This isn't code for "we're just going to day drink instead of doing our jobs," it's an actual show and you can listen to it at www.wrct.org or in Pittsburgh on 88.3FM. So you can tune in there and then catch Double Americana at 1:30PM from Mallory's Mom's house. So, we've got these friends, Le

500 Miles
Double Americana is back in full swing- every Wednesday at noon EST. Let's all take a moment and thank our lucky stars, shall we? We've missed you as much as (we're sure) you missed us. We've mentioned this before, but this round we're going to be doing things a little differently. You'll still get to hear the theme song and we'll still be playing everybody's favorite part of Double Americana, "What's In The Fruitbowl?" but we'll also be bringing you some of our own songs and

Barney
We are ending where we began this record-- on leaving. This is the final post of the We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know blog (and livecast!) series. And we are completing it with the first song we wrote, years ago, in a yellow house in East Nashville. This song was the floodgate opener that brought "Tiny Moses" later that week, then "Take Me With You" just a week after that. It was where we started to leave the homes we had been living in, and began dreaming of

Complications
"Complications" is a complicated song for us. It’s a complicated arrangement and dang if there aren’t some tongue tangling twisters to get through as well. It’s also a complicated theme and one that we’re still working out. But allow us us to tell you a bit of a backstory. We started writing this song a couple years ago when we were “vacationing” with a friend’s family. “Vacationing” is a loose term for us, because it looks pretty similar to our everyday life; we’re staying i

Cohabitation Physics
It's been a few years since we've held down steady, traditional jobs. While we love what we do and the freedom that comes with living on the road, sometimes it's nice to punch somebody else's clock for a couple days. Which is why when our friend Kristie asked us to come make meal kits at My Veggie Chef, we jumped at the chance to stand in a commercial kitchen with some friends and scoop vegetables into plastic bags. Yesterday was Mallory's day to be at work. Which meant that

Viroqua, WI
Greetings from Savannah, GA, Blackbeard's favorite drinking spot, our favorite Southern city and setting of our favorite true crime story, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil." You see, it's Mallory's birthday today and we're partying (Party, party, party, party!) and there's no better place to party than Savannah. So while we're wandering around the Hostess City of the South, eating pralines and drinking manhattan's in one of Savannah's 24 public squares, we're going t

Bobby & Joanne
I really, really love 'Bobby and Joanne! Bryan texted Mallory. Bryan is one of Mallory's favorite people, and they keep a pretty regular conversation going. He gives updates on the goings ons in Nashville and the larger world, and she tells him the weird things Scott says in his sleep. Or, at least that's what Mallory tells Scott she's saying. But also, Bryan is the ultimate encourager, and is the kind to tell a little folk duo that they're doing a good job. Ok, so... I kn

Wildfire (The Ashes on Record)
There's a trick to being a band who writes timely, socially aware music; we're just not exactly sure how the trick works. You keep yourself open to the world. You react. You jerk your knee back and you respond to the news- sometimes appropriately, sometimes in ways you don't intend, sometimes in ways your don't realize- and in that way writing timely, socially aware music is a lot like engaging in an argument online. In our experience with the latter, you don't plan it or eve

Better for You
In our trek through the We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know, we thought we might tackle some of the harder things first. In the coming weeks, we are going to breaking down these songs we wrote and thought suitable for public consumption, and maybe figure out why we thought that in the first place. There will be a couple missing in this series, as we've already covered "Baggage" (boy have we!) with an accompanying music video. As have we with "Tiny Moses," and "Tak

We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know
Happy new album day! We Made Ourselves a Home When We Didn't Know is now out in the world, walking around on it's own two legs, meeting new people, living its life. And we're thrilled for you to hear it. This 13 song album, maybe more than any other, has been the album that we've been wanting to release for a while. Many of these songs were written before we packed it all into the camper, quite a few were written on the road---literally as we were driving---and a couple more

The Rumbly Tummy: Celebratory Krab Cakes for Fancy Occasions.
It's hard to find a good crabcake when you go gluten free, as Mallory discovered five years ago. They're all fally-aparty and mushy without the slight crisp. And it's even harder to find a good crab cake when you go vegan. Sure, there are some delicious alternatives (we can go on and on about Sophie's Kitchen) that use this amazing thing called konjac root that makes a spongy, seafood like consistency. But there's something still a little less than ceremonious-- or fancy-

Bring Me a Little Water, Sylvie
It's midnight at the Texas Canyon rest stop and the moon is so bright it feels like daytime. We got the last spot at the rest area, beating a semi-truck to the spot by mere seconds. We're in Arizona, having just spent a couple days 25 minutes from the Mexico border in a little town called Tubac, where our friends showed us how to live it up in a town full of retirees. This desert air and scenery is doing us well and that's a good thing because we'll be seeing this terrain for

Down by the Riverside
Today on Double Americana we're performing the great Negro spiritual, "Down By The Riverside." Also known as "Aint Gonna Study War No War," this was Mallory's high school fight song, which is ironic on account of it's pacifist nature. Nevertheless, ever time she hears it, she experiences an overwhelming spike in school pride. Go Panthers! Originally sung by slaves before the Civil War, it was an expression of religious hope but also, as was common in spirituals, an allusion

I Belong to the Band
Hello friends! We're on the road! And happy about it! We're currently bumming the internet and electricity from a local coffee shop in the idyllic mountain town of Idyllwild, CA. We've been waking up before 7AM each morning to move the camper because, once again, we're parking in questionable places. But this is fine by us because it allows more time in the day to take long hikes up steep mountains with incredible overlooks before stopping in at Cafe Aroma in the afternoon fo

Down in the Valley
We've spent the last six weeks in the San Joaquin Valley, California's central valley, with the Coastal Range to the West and the majestic Sierra Nevada's to the East. In the strict, technical sense, California is no longer in its seven year drought, but during our six weeks here, we've had three, maybe four, days of rain. Which is not much rain. (The skies did manage to open up a little bit on the couple days that we had designated to pack and move the camper, soaking the la

The Rumbly Tummy: Goatless Cheeze
We've been steadily working on The Rumbly Tummy: A Cook & Color Book since getting to Scott's parents' farm in Central California. We occasionally have to make trips outside of the small town of Dinuba to find ingredients, as there is a surprising lack of tempeh at the local Walmart. After kitchen testing all 54 recipes, we happened on New Year's Eve with a lot of extra room in our bellies on account of them stretching, and a little bit of nostalgia for the days of cheesebo
